It’s a popular Chinese snack made with the silkiest tofu and a clear syrup. Kung Wo Tofu offers different types of tofu and breakfast dishes, none more popular perhaps than their silken tofu pudding. This purveyor of all things tofu is on it. Keeping to puddings, tofu pudding is a Hong Kong food favorite but have you ever had Michelin-recommended tofu pudding? As described, the Michelin Guide now has a section listing the best street food in Hong Kong. What to Order: Steamed milk (hot or cold), egg sandwich, coffee You might want to try both.Īddress: 513 Nathan Rd, Yau Ma Tei, Hong Kong I tried going to Australia Dairy Company as well but they were closed because of a typhoon. Yee Shun Milk Company and Australia Dairy Company are almost always mentioned in the same breath, because of the proximity of these two Hong Kong restaurants and the fact that they’re both considered the best when it comes to this type of comfort food in Hong Kong. It’s famous because it’s a block away from rival shop Australia Dairy Company. Their most famous branch may be the one along Pikem Street in Jordan. Yee Shun Milk Company has several branches throughout Hong Kong but the one I went to was in Yau Ma Tai, along Nathan Road. It was good, but not as eye-openingly good as the steamed milk pudding. The scrambled eggs were served between slices of soft untoasted white bread. I had heard about their scrambled eggs as well so I had the egg sandwich to go with my milk pudding. I became a fan after this very first spoonful, and decided right then and there that we’d be coming back to this shop on every return visit to Hong Kong.īecause it’s made with buffalo’s milk, the pudding is incredibly rich and creamy with just a teeny bit of texture from the milk skin. It’s made from buffalo’s milk which is steamed using a special technique, producing a lighter-than-tofu pudding with a thin skin of milk on top. Yee Shun Milk Company is known for their double skin steamed milk pudding. I’ve been hearing about this popular breakfast/dessert shop for many years, and I finally got to try it on my most recent trip to Hong Kong. Whichever branch we ate at is where I put each restaurant. To help organize this list of restaurants in Hong Kong, I’ve categorized them by location – Kowloon side and Hong Kong Island – though a few of them have multiple outlets with branches in both. Those are the questions we set out to answer when we compiled this list of nineteen of the best Hong Kong food experiences. How do you choose? Who makes the best char siu? Where can I find the most delicious dim sum? The sheer volume of good food in Hong Kong is exciting, but it can also be intimidating. The fact that the bible of all things haute cuisine decided to recognize street food – for the first time ever in Hong Kong – speaks volumes about the food in this city. It’s a gastronomic city in every way, offering a range of experiences from fine dining to street food, a lot of it at a very high level.Ĭase in point, the Michelin Guide has a section dedicated to Hong Kong street food which I believe was the first of its kind anywhere in the world. That for me, is what Hong Kong is all about. I felt quite literally, surrounded by food. I remember looking up at a four or five story building and marveling at how every floor of that structure was occupied by a restaurant. Everywhere I looked there were restaurants, siu mei shops, fast food joints, and street food stalls. On a trip to Hong Kong three years ago, I remember standing still for a few moments in busy Tsim Sha Tsui to take in my surroundings. The revision 3 was introduced as of March 1995 with few changes. September 1994 saw the launch of a special grade called the Bathurst, based on the R II grade. In October 1993, another Type RZ was launched but this time it was limited to 150 units. At this time the R II grade was also introduced which meant there was no back seat. In August 1993, the revision 2 was introduced with improvements such as suspension refinements and upgrading interior parts. It was a limited production run of 300 units with harder suspension, Recaro carbon front seats and no rear seats. Japan saw its first special edition in October 1992 in the form of the Type RZ. The idea was that case rates in a hospital could serve as a proxy for case rates in the broader community. Hospitals were regularly testing all patients, whether they were coming in for Covid-related symptoms or for something else entirely, and they are required to report positive cases. The CDC officially stopped reporting aggregate Covid-19 case counts months ago, noting that data had become less representative of actual infections or transmission levels over time.Īs case counts started to become less reliable, some experts first pointed to hospitalization metrics as a reasonable substitute to gauge transmission. But the rise of rapid home tests - and general waning of public interest in testing at all - has all but erased the ability to grasp current case counts nationwide. Tracking Covid-19 trends has always had its challenges. And IHME estimates from that time suggest that the US was in one of the worst waves of the pandemic, second only to the Omicron surge. In mid-December, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was reporting about 500,000 cases a week. Mokdad declined to quantify an estimate for current case counts, but he said he’s been getting lots of calls and questions about Covid-19 recently - similar to what he experienced around the end of last year. “We felt that the margin of error became really too big for us to make a prediction that we could stand by and defend.” “The surveillance system was not adequate anymore to capture changes in Covid-19,” he said. It may be time to break out the masks against Covid, some experts sayĪll of the measures that factored into the model had stopped being reported or had changed in some way, said Ali Mokdad, professor of health metrics sciences and chief strategy officer of population health at the University of Washington. But the research institute paused that modeling in December.Ī mid adult female, standing outside places an N95 mask on her face for protection during the pandemic. “And we should be paying attention to it, because we are starting to see an increase.”įrom 2020 to 2022, the University of Washington’s Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation produced regular estimates of Covid-19 case rates and projections for trends. “There is more transmission out there than what the surveillance data indicates,” said Janet Hamilton, executive director of the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists. Rates of severe disease may be staying at relatively low levels, but experts agree that there are probably more infections than the current surveillance systems can capture. “We have several folks down with Covid, unfortunately,” one health-focused nonprofit told CNN when seeking comment for this story. His 1995 work Turning the World Inside Out, far smaller than the one proposed for Chicago, served as the conceptual basis for the polished metal work-a representation of liquid mercury, to some-that would become Cloud Gate. His works are housed in museums around the world, from San Francisco to Parto, Italy, and Sydney, Australia.Īt the time of the Millennium Park proposal, Kapoor had yet to create a site-specific installation in the United States. Kapoor has enjoyed solo exhibitions at some of art’s most respected venues, including the Guggenheim Museum in New York and Reina Sofia in Madrid, among many others. He was a standout at Hornsey College of Art and Chelsea School of Art Design, and his reputation as one of the world’s leading sculptors has only grown. The Artist behind the Chicago Beanīorn in 1954 in Bombay (now Mumbai), India, Kapoor moved to London in the 1970s. That optimistic estimate would be tripled before the final unveiling of Cloud Gate. The final decision, announced in 1999, budgeted just under $6 million for the project, with Ameritech contributing some $3 million. That space was also better suited to handle the 110-ton weight of the steel form. The solution was to move Kapoor’s unnamed project (Kapoor names projects only after their completion) to the space initially reserved for Koons. The only concern about Kapoor’s work, according to some, was that its location in the Lurie Garden might generate so much foot traffic as to trample the organic installations there. Reservations were in contrast to Kapoor’s proposal of a mirrored stainless steel object roughly 66 feet long. The physical size of the work, the committee also feared, could come to dominate the space. Yet to make the vision a reality, other components would be necessary, namely an elevator that could ensure access to the work for disabled visitors. Visitors would be able to observe the park from on high, then slide down to ground level. Koons envisioned a 150-foot-long glass and steel slide raised 90 feet above the ground. The initial proposal from Koons, however, quickly ran into challenges. With the field narrowed, the committee commissioned both artists for works in separate areas of Grant Park-Koons’ in AT&T Plaza (then known as Ameritech and later SBC Plaza) and Kapoor’s in the Lurie Garden. Without soliciting specific ideas for the spaces in Millennium Park, the committee narrowed its list to just two artists: British artist Anish Kapoor and U.S. To start, the committee pooled a list of 16–30 artists (the number varies based on accounts) from around the world with experience in large-scale outdoor works. A committee that included representatives from the Art Institute of Chicago, Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, and some of the city’s foremost art patrons was tasked with narrowing the field and ultimately choosing the artists to tackle these public art installations. Part of Millennium Park included plans for several public art works. (Funds came from tax payers and private donors.) Nor were its costs as originally anticipated, rising from a substantial $150 million to $475 million by the time of completion. Planning for the project in a northwest corner of Grant Park began in 1997, but delays pushed its public unveiling to 2004, nearly half a decade after the transition into the 2000s. Millennium Park, in some ways, is a misnomer. This is the inside story on Chicago Bean history. The final product, a gleaming steel mirror that bends the Chicago sky and skyline around its surface, had a long path to fruition, from selection to development. In less than a decade, Cloud Gate, known by most simply as “the Bean,” has vaulted into one of Chicago’s top attractions. |
